After a thrilling opening Test in Barbados, West Indies and Australia move on to Grenada.

  • West Indies have lost three of their last four Tests.
  • Australia have won five of their last six Tests.
  • West Indies won the last Test in Grenada by ten wickets!

Although Australia eventually won the first Test in Barbados by 159 runs last week, it was a thrilling fixture and at one stage the hosts WWest Indies certainly looked capable of making it back to back wins against the Aussies.

However, despite a fine showing from Shamarh Joseph with the ball, Australia were able to dig in and Travis Head was the key player, making a half-century in both innings on a pitch where many struggled.

Moving onto this second Test at St George’s, West Indies must avoid defeat to keep the three match series alive and they enjoyed their last match in this format at this venue, when they saw off England by a ten wicket margin in 2022!

West Indies Preview

Shai Hope showed he is still a fine Test player by top scoring for West Indies in their first innings in Barbados but overall it was a very poor batting display from the ‘Men in Maroon’ last week.

Skipper Roston Chase also impressed with 44 runs from 108 balls in the same innings but 82 of the team’s 141 runs came from numbers eight and below in the final innings of the game so top order runs need to be found this time around.

This West Indies side are blessed with a strong bowling attack and they are the most likely way of getting the hosts back into the series.

Jayden Seales took 5/60 while his opening partner Shamar Joseph took 4/46 in the first innings before Joseph once again showed his class with 5/87 in the second innings. If Alzarri Joseph can also deliver in this Test then West Indies could get back into the series.

Australia Preview

Australia may have won the opening Test of the series by 159 runs but the truth is that the final result covered up a host of failures, particularly in the top order batting.

With Steven Smith set to come back after recovering from the finger injury sustained while fielding in the slips during the World Test Championship Final against South Africa at Lord’s last month, one of Sam Konstas, Cameron Green or Josh Inglis will need to give way.

Travis Head, for so long a trusty middle-order batter for his country, is now one of the most experienced in the side and he alongside Smith will be key to Australia’s chances in Grenada.

With the ball, expect the tried and tested quad of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and captain Pat Cummins to make things hard from ball one for the host’s batters.

Weather Conditions

Expect typical Caribbean weather throughout this game with the temperature above 30 degrees throughout. There is a chance of some short showers on days three and four.

WI vs AUS Pitch Report

The National Cricket Stadium has hosted only four previous Tests and this has been a venue where bat has tended to dominate over ball. We expect 450+ to be a par score in both first innings of the game.

Toss: To Bat

Irrespective of the conditions, both sides like to bat first. As seen by West Indies in the fourth innings, batting last is never easy and we predict both captains will want to bat first.
