ENG vs IND Match Prediction & Analysis
Many supporters who were at the ground, and millions of others who followed the action in Leeds last week will remember the opening Test of this series for many years.
Ultimately it was England, who despite putting India in on day one which ended with the tourists 359/3, who came out on top by five wickets but this was a Test full of batting quality.
Rishabh Pant will still be wondering quite how he became only the 12th player in all time in Men’s Tests to hit centuries in both innings and end on the losing side – India also became the first side in first class cricket to have five centuries in a match and lose!
But the context of the series is crucial for this game. If England win then they will go two up with three to play whereas a win for India will see things all square.
Game on in Birmingham!
TEAMS PREVIEW
England Preview
In typical England ‘BazBall’ style, the hosts announced their XI for this Test on Monday afternoon and Ben Stokes will be leading the same players in this game.
That means no return to Test cricket for Jofra Archer, who last played a game in this format in February 2021, but he will be watching from the balcony and England are clearly keen to get him back in their side as soon as possible.
Josh Tongue and Ben Stokes both took four wickets each in the first innings in Leeds and the hosts will be looking for more from the experienced Chris Woakes who is playing on his home ground.
With the bat, Ben Duckett was England’s standout batter in Leeds but all of the line-up now look to be in strong form at the start of this series which could spell trouble for India.
India Preview
It will be a tough job for the captain Shubman Gill to get his side ready for this Test in Birmingham after they seemed to be on top for so long during the opening game in Leeds.
Ultimately, though, it was lower order runs which failed the side and that could see the team bolster their batting line-up at the tail in this game to prevent the type of collapses seen at Headingley.
At the top of the order, India look fine with Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Gill and Rishabh Pant all hitting tons in Leeds and the class of Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair will both deliver at some stage as well.
Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be picked with the series still on the line and spinner Kuldeep Yadav will come in on a dry Birmingham wicket.
Weather Conditions
Although the crazy temperatures seen across the UK will fall a little before the start of this Test, it will still be nice and warm over the first three days. There is a chance of more cloud cover, lower temperatures and potentially some showers on days four and five.
ENG vs IND Pitch Report
Edgbaston is a loud and noisy venue where both sides can expect to receive plenty of support! The ball comes onto the bat at speed and the outfield is always fast so expect a par score of 400-450 in the first innings of the game.
Toss: To Bat
Although England won by chasing in Leeds, do not be surprised if both teams choose to bat first in Birmingham. After a recent heatwave, the pitch will be dry and will turn on days four and five.
