Zimbabwe’s hunt for a maiden victory against New Zealand

  • Zimbabwe has never defeated New Zealand in the 17 games between them
  • Zimbabwe has won only once in the last 15 Test Matches the team has played
  • New Zealand has won three Test Matches away from home

We are in the 1st Test Match of the two-match series, where hosts Zimbabwe will face a herculean challenge as they take on New Zealand. Zimbabwe has struggled in recent weeks and suffered a 0-2 whitewash against the South Africans. They will appear to perform positively in this game. New Zealand lost to England in their last Test series, but the team has a strong group of players and will look to do well.

New Zealand has a good record against Zimbabwe. They have never lost against Zimbabwe in the 17 games between the two teams. The side has a strong batting lineup, and it will make them confident heading into the game. The Zimbabweans have had little to celebrate in the last two years, and it will be interesting to see how they fare in this game.

Zimbabwe Preview

Craig Ervine’s team struggled against the South Africans in the last series. The bowling attack struggled in both games, and the batting lineup failed to build partnerships. The side will face a tough challenge as the Kiwis have done well in recent games. Ervine must lead from the front and play positive cricket and focus on winning the sessions.

Ben Curran’s return to the team adds strength to the batting, and he will look to deliver a good start in the game with Brian Bennett. Craig Ervine is the backbone of this batting lineup, and he must add runs in the middle order with Sean Williams and Nick Welch. The team will need Clive Madande, Wessly Madhevere, and Wellington Masakadza to add runs in the lower middle order.

Wellington Masakadza and Blessing Muzarabani must use the home conditions to their advantage and get early breakthroughs in the game. Tanaka Chivanga has shown promise as a young bowler and must trouble the Kiwis with Vincent Masekesa in the middle. The team will need a good show in the supporting roles from Wellington Masakadza and Brian Bennett.

New Zealand Preview

Tom Latham has bee ruled out due to shoulder injury. Mitchell Satner will captain the NZ team for this game. The Kiwis will take the field in whites after a gap of more than six months. The last 12 months have been exciting for the side, where they defeated India in India but failed to defeat England at home. They have a strong group of players, and Santner would expect a strong show from his players as they aim for an early lead in the two-match series.

Henry Nicholls will have to play an important role at No. 3 and build partnerships with Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell. Tom Blundell and Mitchell Santner add to the team’s batting firepower in the lower middle order.

Jacob Duffy has enjoyed good form in the last two years, and he will look to strike early with Matt Henry to put the hosts under pressure. William O’Rourke and Mitchell Santner are key bowlers in the team, and they will look to do well in the middle overs. Nathan Smith and Rachin Ravindra add depth to this attack, making it a formidable one.

Weather Conditions

There would be clear skies over Bulawayo. The pitch will be a tough one to bat on. Batsmen will have to be cautious in their approach and play patiently. The average first-inning score is just above 314 runs, and the team batting first would be happy to have 400 runs on the board.

ZIM vs NZ Pitch Report

The pitch at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, is slow, which creates problems for the batsmen. The large outfield is also a challenge. Most players are used to playing in smaller parks in this format. There is early assistance for the fast bowlers, and spinners have done well as the ball tends to stop on the batsmen, creating doubts in their minds.

Toss: To Bat

The track is dual-paced, and batting against the spinners is difficult in the 4th innings. Batting won’t be easy here in the last two days when the wicket starts breaking. The side winning the toss would like to bat first and post a big score on the board.
