Can Australia complete a clean sweep and make it a 3-0 series win in Jamaica?

  • Both previous Tests have been closely contested in the first innings before Australia have pulled clear.
  • West Indies have lost four of their last five Tests.
  • Australia have won all of their Tests this year except the World Test Championship Final.

Although many experts and pundits would have predicted Australia to be 2-0 ahead with one Test remaining, this series has been far closer than the current scoreline suggests.

What’s more, West Indies have been all over Australia’s batters for large parts of the matches and with this Test taking place with the pink ball, the likes of Shamarh Joseph could be primed to cause more misery for the tourists under the lights.

That said, Australia have their own experts in these conditions and in Mitchell Starc have a brilliant exponent of bowling with the pink ball. What’s more, the left-arm pacer is playing in his 100th Test so will be sure to want to mark the occasion with a strong display.

West Indies Preview

West Indies have had athletic and accurate bowlers for much of the last decade but right now have a battery with the ball who are capable of causing the best batters in the world plenty of trouble!

The issue for the ‘Men in Maroon’ has been the lack of consistent runs with the bat and that continues to be the main issue for the team in this series.

Opener John Campbell and Brandon King hit 115 of West Indies’ runs in their first innings in Grenada but the team collapsed to 143 all out in the fourth innings of the game to lose by 133 runs.

The bowling trinity of Jayden Seales, Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph continue to be the main threat to the Australians while Shai Hope, Campbell and King look the most likely to make significant contributions with the bat in Jamaica.

Australia Preview

There remains plenty of batting issues for Australia to deal with but there was at least a half-century from Cameron Green at number three in the second innings in Grenada. The returning Steven Smith impressed with 71 in the same innings before trusty Travis Head and keeper-batter Alex Carey continued their consistent returns.

Sam Konstas at the top of the order has been particularly poor on this tour and he needs to make a score to give the selectors something to think about ahead of the Sheffield Shield campaign and the Ashes in mid-November.

For all of Australia’s inconsistencies with the bat, they remain one of the most reliable bowling sides in world cricket. Time will eventually catch up with Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, with spinner Nathan Lyon showing no signs of giving up, but for now, they remain a very talented bowling unit.

Weather Conditions

The forecast is for a mixture of conditions throughout the five days and evenings in Jamaica but it will be humid from start to finish. Expect the odd shower but enough time available to see a result.

WI vs AUS Pitch Report

This used to be one of the grounds where touring batters feared facing the West Indian pacers and although there will be pace in the surface it is not what it once was. Whoever bats first will be looking to post around 350 to be ahead in the game.

Toss: To Bat

With the added drama of the pink ball and floodlights, the toss becomes even more important in a day-night Test. Both sides will want to bat big during the natural light of the first innings and we predict both captains will choose to bat first.
