Can Sri Lanka bounce back in the decider game?

  • Sri Lanka were bowled out for 94 in the 2nd T20I
  • Litton Das and Towhid Hridoy are back in form
  • Bowlers will have the upper hand on this ground

With the series tied 1-1, the 3rd and final match of the series will be the decider. The R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the venue for the first two one-dayers, will host the 3rd and final match of the T20I series.

Bowlers have found great success on this ground and will play a key role in this match as well. Both teams have a quality bowling attack that has helped them to a win each.

After Sri Lanka restricted Bangladesh to 154 while bowling first in the opening T20I, the visitors bowled out Sri Lanka for 94 runs in the next outing while defending a competitive total.

Bangladesh will be happy with their key players making a comeback in the last game. Skipper Litton Das, Towhid Hridoy, and Shamim Hossain delivered impactful knocks to take them to 177 after being put to bat first in Dambulla.

The home team features all of their star players in the batting lineup. We expect them to bounce back in this match and put up a good total on the board. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis will be the ones to watch out for at the top.

Sri Lanka Preview

Sri Lanka have won both Test and ODI series and will be out to seal the T20Is too. Skipper Charith Asalanka will be hoping to see his batters find their rhythm and get back to making impactful contributions to the team total.

In addition to the openers who played a key role in their successful run chase in the opening game, they will also need Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando in the middle order to come good.

Fernando scored an unbeaten 11 off 17 balls in the first match as Sri Lanka chased down a 155-run target. Perera was out for 25 off 25 in that match at number 3. The two middle-order batters failed to get going in the second match.

The pitch in Colombo offers help for the bowlers and will pose a challenge for these two batsmen, who are struggling to find form at the moment. Former skipper Dasun Shanaka is a quality all-rounder and can play a finisher’s role at number 6.

Asalanka and Shanaka need to step up and play some fine knocks in the lower middle order to deliver a strong finish and set Sri Lanka up for a big comeback with the bat. B Fernando, M Theekshana, and N Thushara are the key wicket takers in this bowling attack.

There is a good variety in the bowling department. Asalanka should be backing his bowlers to pose a tough challenge to the visitors on this ground. All-rounders, Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne, are other bowling options for the skipper.

Bangladesh Preview

Bangladesh made a big comeback in the second T20I at Dambulla with their middle-order batters rising to the occasion with quality knocks. Skipper Litton Das with a 76-run knock and Shammim Hossain scoring 48 off 27 balls at number 6 led the comeback.

Parvez Hossain Emon is a promising opening batter and will be one to watch out for in the top 3. Though there are many quality, reliable batters in the middle and lower middle order, the top order needs to deliver a strong start.

They can’t rely on the lower middle order to deliver match-winning performances every time. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shammim Hossain, and Jaker Ali are the key players from 5 through 7 who can make an impact with the bat.

After being outplayed by the Sri Lankan batters in the first T20I, Bangladesh bowlers bounced back with a brilliant performance in the second. They completely outplayed the opposition while defending 177 runs.

Rishad Hossain and Shoriful Islam led the destruction. These two will be the ones to watch out for in the bowling attack. They also have the support of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Saifuddin.

Bangladesh replaced Taskin Ahmed with the experienced Mustafizur Rahman, and we reckon they will stick to this choice for the final match too.

Weather Conditions

There will be scattered thunderstorms in Colombo all day with a high of 28 degrees Celsius. The game is likely to be affected by the weather, and in the best-case scenario, we are likely to lose a few overs and still have the game.

SL vs BAN Pitch Report

The pitch at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo is a balanced one with the bowlers finding success on most occasions, including the recent one-day matches here. The average 1st innings score in T20Is at this venue is 142 runs. We reckon the team batting first can be in a winning position if they cross the 170-run mark at this venue.

Toss: To Bowl

Teams bowling first have won 34 of the 58 T20Is played at this venue. Both teams have a quality bowling attack and depth in their batting lineup that should allow them to chase down a total. The visitors should back themselves to put Sri Lanka to bat first and wrap up the innings for a par score.
