ENG vs IND Match Prediction & Analysis
England got the toss wrong in the second Test. The pitch was similar to the one at Headingley, with plenty of support for the batters. Stokes and McCullum thought they would chase down anything around 300-400 in the 4th innings.
However, they failed to take into account India’s batting strength and the potential score they would pile up in the first innings. England are far behind in the competition, particularly in bowling. Akash Deep’s 10-fer turned the game on its head, putting the visitors in the driver’s seat.
Mohammad Siraj has lived under Jasprit Bumrah’s shadow for too long. He was also unlucky in the first Test to have missed the outside edge on numerous occasions. Siraj has posed a huge threat to the England batting lineup and will continue to do so in this match.
TEAMS PREVIEW
England Preview
England will be looking to make some changes in the pace attack as they come to Lord’s for the third Test. They have added Gus Atkinson to the squad of 16, which gives them 8 pace options, including skipper Ben Stokes.
The hosts are likely to turn to Jofra Archer for pace and bounce at the Lord’s. He could be the game-changer for England in terms of bowling. In the batting department, England need their key players to rise to the occasion and navigate the Bumrah challenge.
Jasprit Bumrah is likely to come back for the 3rd Test and can be lethal on this ground. Both Siraj and Bumrah have been brilliant at this venue against England in the past, and the top order needs to find a way to take the attack to them.
Ollie Pope and Joe Root have major roles to play at 3 and 4, respectively. The two must strike a big partnership to avoid any major collapse. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were exceptional in the fourth innings of the first Test and need to replicate a similar performance in this match.
India Preview
India bounced back handsomely after the 5-wicket loss at Headingley. India’s batting continued to flourish with Gill breaking records and scoring 269 and 161 at Edgbaston to put India far ahead of the hosts.
However, this time around, India’s pacers stepped up and delivered just what the skipper asked for. Akash Deep and Mohammad Siraj made sure England had to struggle for every run. Except for the 303-run stand between Brook and Smith for the 6th wicket, there was no point in the Test match where India did not dominate England.
We think Bumrah’s return should not affect Akash Deep’s place in the XI. He’s been a great find for India. He has nailed the seam position and gets the ball to move back after pitching it on the right length.
That is another area where Indian bowlers were better than the hosts – the lengths. Bumrah’s return to the side will boost India’s chances of dominating England with the ball once again.
In the batting department, along with the skipper, many have been in great touch, and will be confident after their performances in the last two matches.
Weather Conditions
It will be partly cloudy on Day 1 of the match with a high of 29 degrees Celsius in London. The next two days will be mostly sunny and present a great opportunity for the batters. There will be cloudy skies on the final two days of the match, but as of now, there are no signs of rain.
ENG vs IND Pitch Report
Historically, it has been a balanced but tricky wicket at the Lord’s in London. The slope of the ground is also a key factor that helps the swing bowlers. We expect an even contest between bat and ball on this pitch. England will be looking to correct their mistakes from the last game and prepare a more lively pitch for this game. The average 1st innings and 2nd innings score in Tests at this venue is 309 and 298 runs. We think if the team batting first manages to reach the 400-run mark, they will be in a very strong position in the game.
Toss: To Bat
Considering that England are asking for a spicier pitch at Lord’s after the humiliating defeat at Edgbaston, we reckon batting first will be a wise decision. Though the last Test here between South Africa and Australia saw the former chase down a target comfortably, we believe the pitch will likely have demons by the 5th day of this match. The teams batting first here have won 53 matches, while the teams bowling first have won 44. There seems to be an advantage to batting first on this ground, as we’ve seen India too, winning on this ground while defending a total on the final day.
