It’s a re-run of the World Test Championship Final but this time it’s T20 in Darwin!

  • Australia have won their last five T20Is.
  • South Africa have lost three of their last four in this format.
  • Australia have beaten South Africa in their last five T20I head to heads.

This is an exciting yet early start to the cricket season in Australia as current World Test Champions South Africa arrive on their shores for three T20Is followed by three ODIs.

This first T20I gets underway in Darwin and although the likes of David Warner and Steve Smith are playing in the Men’s Hundred in the UK, the majority of players who would be considered as first choice for Australia and South Africa in this format are available and in the squads.

The Marrara Oval has never previously hosted a T20I so we can expect plenty of interest from the locals ahead of and when this game gets underway on Sunday evening.

Australia are the hosts, which normally gives them a huge advantage and they have been far more successful in this format than South Africa of late. That said, Proteas will have a new found spring in their step after beating Australia in the WTC final at Lord’s in June.

Australia Preview

No Pat Cummins, no Mitchell Starc, no David Warner, no Steve Smith… there could be some who would cry that Australia will never be great again without these four but the team they put out for this game will still be one of the best on paper in this format.

At the top of the order, expect the trio of captain Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Short and the unorthodox but mighty effective Travis Head to lead the way. All three only know one way to play this format of cricket and they will look to take South Africa’s bowlers down-town particularly during the powerplay with the new ball.

Not that the top of the batting line-up is all Australia have! The powerhouse of in-form batters like Cameron Green and Tim David with Glenn Maxwell promise nothing but quick runs as well.

South Africa Preview

Here come the South Africans! Fresh from winning the World Test Championship and nearly breaking the individual world record for a Test batter, they arrive in north Australia looking to establish a dominance over their strong hosts.

Under the captaincy of Aiden Markram and some fine young batters, this could be a seismic moment for South Africa who believe they have the talent to start to rule the roost across all formats.

Markram is likely to open and will have Ryan Rickelton along with Lhuan-dre Pretorius for company before stroke makers Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs take over. If there is a need for an anchor innings, it will come from Rassie van der Dussen.

Weather Conditions

It will be another hot day in Darwin with plenty of sunshine and some cloud cover. Expect the temperature to be up at 31 degrees at the toss before dropping to the mid and low twenties by the end of the match.

AUS vs RSA Pitch Report

The Marrara Oval is a very different place to play for those who have grown up with steep, large stadiums in Australia. The Airport End and Abala Road End will appear very different to the MCG but there will still be plenty of runs on offer with a par score likely to be around 190.

Toss: To Bowl

With humidity levels set to rise across this game, we expect both teams to want to field first. Therefore, we predict that the captains of both sides will choose to bowl if they win the toss.
