The new World Test Championship cycle begins in Galle on Tuesday morning!

  • Sri Lanka have lost each of their last four Test matches.
  • Bangladesh have won two of their last three Tests.
  • Sri Lanka have not lost any of their last eight Tests against Bangladesh.

South Africa beat Australia in a low-scoring but thoroughly entertaining and exciting final of the 2023-25 World Test Championship on Saturday but two days later and it’s time for the 2025-27 WTC to get underway!

Galle is the venue to kick off this new cycle with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh going head to head in the first of two Tests. This has been a one-sided contest over the years in this format with Bangladesh picking up just one victory across the 26 Tests between the sides who first met over the longest format in 2001.

Neither side comes into this WTC cycle in great Test form, although all four of Sri Lanka’s most recent Test defeats were against the two finalists from Lord’s – Australia and South Africa!

Bangladesh did at least win their last Test, but it was against Zimbabwe, a side who had beaten them earlier in the same month by three wickets.

Sri Lanka Preview

Captain Dhananjaya de Silva was quick to remind his team-mates ahead of this series just how close they got to the World Test Championship final last weekend at Lord’s and he will be keen to see his side get off to a winning start in this series against Bangladesh in Galle.

But it will be a slightly changed Sri Lanka team as former skipper and consistent opener Dimuth Karunaratne has recently retired from Test cricket so there will be opportunities at the top of the order.

Although Karunaratne has moved on, Sri Lanka still enjoy a good number of experienced players in their XI, none more so than keeper-batter Kusal Mendis and all-rounder Angelo Mathews.

Pathum Nissanka has an excellent record across all formats at the top of the order and spinner Prabath Jayasuriya has an excellent Test record so far in his career.

Bangladesh Preview

Although Bangladesh have not been anywhere near the top places in any of the three previous World Test Championship cycles, they do come into this game off the back of an innings and 106 run victory against Zimbabwe as well as a 101 run win over West Indies in November last year.

This will be a much tougher contest than either of those games as Sri Lanka are a tough opposition on home soil and are also a much stronger side than West Indies or Zimbabwe!

However, you can only beat what is in front of you and Bangladesh have plenty of experience in their batting line-up from Litton Das at the top of the order to captain Najmul Hasan Shanton and Mushfiqur Rahim.

All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz is a match-winner with both bat and ball and Taijul Islam is another bowling all-rounder with the skills to cause Sri Lanka plenty of problems.

Weather Conditions

It will be typical Galle weather throughout the week according to the forecast! That means plenty of humidity from start to finish, temperature in the high 20s and a chance of rain on most days.

SL vs BAN Pitch Report

The surface in Galle is one where bounce will be low but consistent over the first three days. That may change across the last two days and a par first innings total is likely to be 450+.

Toss: To Bowl

On a pitch which often turns from early on day two before turning sharply by the end of day three, it would be a huge surprise if either of the skippers chose to bowl first in this Test.
