The opening game began with England batting first. Ben Duckett (32) and Phil Salt (43) provided a fiery, however the side faced a batting collapse until skipper Jos Buttler (52) and young Jacob Bethell (51) stabilized the innings. The duo stitched an important 59-run partnership. The Indian bowlers quickly wrapped the English tail and bowled them out for 248 runs in 47.4 overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Harshit Rana picked three wickets each.

In reply, vice-captain Shubman Gill was the top-scorer of his side with a knock of 87 (96) while Shreyas Iyer scored 59 (36). Furthermore, Axar Patel played a crucial hand with the bat, scoring a 47 ball-52. While India lost some wickets in the middle but managed to win the game by four wickets and 68 balls to spare.

The track of Cuttack is considered helpful usually good for the spinners and offers some bounce which helps the pacers well, especially once the ball gets semi-new after the first spells. It is not easy to play pace bowling against the new ball here.  Batters will have to be careful on this track. However, in recent times, batters have been getting good decks in white-ball cricket.

The left-arm-spinner Ravindra Jadeja bowled brilliantly in the series opener as he picked up 3/26 in nine overs. Jadeja got rid of Joe Root, Sune Luus, Jacob Bethell, and Adil Rashid. The 36-year-old will look to make good use of the conditions and bowl another match-winning spell in the upcoming game.
